Concept art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, composition, idea and/or mood for use in movies, games, architecture, advertising or books before it is put into the final product.
This is a relatively new designation popularized by artists working in the automobile and video games industries.
Concept art is also referred to as "visual development" in traditional animation. The term was later adopted by the games industry.
Concept art happens as traditional media, but has become very popular on computers. The use of a graphic tablet hardware with various painting softwares like Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter enable faster and cheaper working methods.
The reality of Conceptual art are mostly strict deadlines and tight budget. Time consuming details and fine touch ups are very seldom done in concept paintings, since the main focus is set on good design, composition and if applicable color palette and mood.
